The members of the JSIR are extremely pleased to have the Opportunity to hold the 7th Meeting of the APSIR in Tokyo.

Basic studies on erectile function and the diagnosis and treatment of ED have made dramatic progress. In particular, the development of Intracavernous injection of papaverine, or prostaglandin and the vacuum constriction device at the time this society was formed opened the way to conservative treatment of organic ED. Sildenafil (Viagra) and MUSE2 were approved in 1998 in the USA, sildenafil has just been approved in Japan, and these therapies will be approved in various Asian and Pacific countries in the near future. Reviewing the results of basic studies, it has been clarified that NO plays a role in erectile function and many papers have been published on its use in the treatment of ED. We believe that the diagnosis and treatment of ED will undergo considerable change, with more ED patients requesting treatment. We also believe that various ethical issues will surface.

The upcoming meeting will be held at a turning point in basic studies on as well as the diagnosis and treatment of ED. Various agents are currently being developed and will be reported on at the upcoming meeting. We plan to hold sessions and special lectures mainly by Japanese and Asia-Pacific investigators conducting state-of-the-art studies on ED at this meeting.

We will endeavor to allow all the speakers and attendees time for sufficient discussion after each presentation. The members of the JSIR will make every effort to meet the expectations of all participants. We anticipate that many members will come to join us.

We look forward to seeing you in Tokyo.
