Dato' Dr. Hui Meng Tan, Organising Chairman,
First Asian ISSAM Meeting on the Aging Male

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Organising Committee, I would like to extend a warm invitation to all of you to take this timely opportunity to attend the First Asian ISSAM Meeting on the Aging Male to be held in Kuala Lumpur from 1-4 March 2001.

The field of the Aging Male is quickly becoming one of the most important and fastest expanding fields of medicine today. It is becoming a vital link in helping us face the challenges of a rapidly increasing aging population. The aging world, particularly in Asia where the majority of the countries are in the developing stage, is heading towards a bleak future, if prompt measures and advice are not heeded or implemented expeditiously on both the national and international levels.

The aging population is an important resource to society and it is vital to sustain the productivity of this segment of the population in many of the rapidly aging nations. For a large segment of this population, medical intervention, including hormonal manipulation or substitution will be necessary to alleviate problems, prevent disability and improve quality of life.

The aging phenomenon or the impending “agequake” is not only a medical but also a socio-political problem. By creating and advocating broad awareness for healthy living, focusing on ways and means to reduce or modify such factors and change unhealthy habits, disability-free life expectancy can be prolonged and dependency delayed.

Thus, this truly multidisciplinary field of medicine, which has huge socio-political components, poses a tremendous challenge to all medical professionals and policy-makers alike. In this timely First Asian ISSAM Meeting, opportunities abound for both the medical professionals, researchers, policy makers as well as corporate figures to discuss, learn, manage and implement measures to face the imminent problems of the aging population.

It is only by working together today that we can circumvent the problems of tomorrow.

Once again, I extend a very warm invitation to all of you to meet in Kuala Lumpur from 1 - 4 March 2001. I urge you to bring your colleagues, associated professionals, and political and corporate figures who can make an impact in helping to shape vital policies to help your nation cope with the impending global aging phenomenon. Dato' Dr. Hui Meng Tan, Organising Chairman
